Everyone is saying that what Harvey Weinstein allegedly did is not uncommon in Hollywood. Everyone says that there are many, many others, and that this is still going on every day. And we now have the #MeToo hashtag that is ostensibly giving women a voice who have suffered sexual harassment and sexual assault; and this, I guess, is supposed to somehow help cure society of what is being portrayed as an endemic, all-pervading problem.
The thing is, it doesn’t.
Saying “me too” does nothing whatsoever to stop predatory, pathological men from abusing women. They are stopped by being identified, investigated, and arrested. It is kind of remarkable to me that Hollywood insiders can say that these kinds of things are still going on, and it needs to stop, and there are many others, and then stop short of naming the offenders whom they obviously know; and no one calls them on that.
The overwhelming majority of men do not sexually harass or abuse women; and the majority of men feel outraged when women are abused, and the first thing men want to know is “who did it?” And when we see the hashtag #MeToo, that is exactly what we want to know.
And here is the negative side of #MeToo. It lends itself to the creation of a kind of collective indictment. #MeToo? #ByWho? Without a name, blanket suspicion falls on the entire male population.
Last time I checked, half a million users had joined the hashtag, and I am sure this is only the beginning. I am not saying that all or any of these claims are false, but that is what they are: claims. And as the number of these claims increases, the perception will also grow that there is an equivalent number of perpetrators; which is inaccurate. There were dozens if not hundreds of women who were allegedly victimised by Harvey Weinstein; one man. It is a very different thing to identify serial abusers who inflict suffering on a large scale, and to only emphasise the largeness of the scale.
It is not as though recourse does not exist. When you say nothing more than #MeToo, you might as well add, #I_also_didnt_report_my_abuser; and doesn’t that make you part of the problem? Because, if you had reported your abuser, maybe he wouldn’t have given another woman a reason to say #MeToo.
This is how people begin to talk in vague terms about “institutional sexism” or “rape culture” without talking about specific offenders and specific instances of wrongdoing, which can only ultimately result in undermining overall social cohesion; driving a wedge between men and women even when neither party has actually wronged the other.
If we need to “do more” to stop sexual harassment and abuse, we need to begin by doing the least, which is to name culprits and prosecute them.

وعندما نصل إلى هذه التساؤلات يبدأ الناس في التحدث بعبارات غامضة عن “التمييز على أساس الجنس” أو “ثقافة الاغتصاب” دونما التحدث عن مرتكبي جرائم محددة وحالات محددة من المخالفات، مما يؤدي في نهاية المطاف إلى تقويض التماسك الاجتماعي ويزيد من الهوة بين الرجال والنساء حتى عندما لا يسيء أي منهم للآخر.
إن كنا بحاجة إلى “بذل المزيد” لوقف التحرش والأذى الجنسي، فإننا نحتاج إلى أن نبدأ ببذل أقل ما يمكن، وهو في هذه الحالة: تحديد الجناة بالاسم ومحاكمتهم.
